The first game of the first round series between the Houston Rockets and the OKC Thunder starts on Sunday when the Thunder make their way to Houston to kick off the action.
The Thunder are a shell of the team they were a season ago led by Kevin Durant, who bolted for the Warriors before the season. But behind their fearless leader and triple-double machine Russell Westbrook, they have a puncher’s chance at an upset in the first round.
Highlights: Let’s talk about the MVP battle. This might be the most debated MVP race in years between Russell Westbrook and James Harden and even Kawhi Leonard, so of course the NBA gods have gifted us this matchup in the first round. It’s triple-Russell vs. the uber-efficient Harden, the latter of which boasts a better team. I don’t know who will win the series. And sadly, neither will likely guard one another. But I don’t care, and neither should you. This will be grab-your-popcorn-and-sit-on-the-couch appointment viewing.

The Bulls will be without Zach LaVine until November as he tries to recover from a torn left ACL but that opens the opportunity for Kris Dunn to showcase his mettle. Dunn was the major project of the training camp and is expected to play as the starting point guard this season. Coach Fred Hoiberg has hinted that the strong 6-4 guard probably will start at point guard in Tuesday’s opener against the Pelicans.
However, the Bulls won’t be able to see 2017 NBA draftee Lauri Markkanen in action on Tuesday. The rookie acquired in the Jimmy Butler trade is dealing with a sore back which he picked up in the training camp. He will miss Tuesday’s opener and also the Wednesday’s game in Dallas.
New Orleans Pelicans Team News
Dante Cunningham who decided to re-sign with the New Orleans late into summer will be playing his fourth season with the franchise. The eight-year NBA veteran is most likely get a starting role but before that, he may have to prove himself in the preseason games. Cunningham is slated to start at small forward in Tuesday’s opener versus Chicago.
